About
Fix what can't move.
Let the rest change.
Isaac Mackay is an art director in Portland, Oregon. Fifteen years spent on one problem: building image systems that hold their shape when the format changes underneath them.
The argument
A brand system is defined by what you refuse to move.
Most identity work fails in the same place. It is designed once, at one size, for one context — and then reality arrives. A different medium, a smaller module, a worse crop, a junior designer three years later with no access to the original reasoning. The system bends until it is unrecognisable, and nobody can point to the moment it broke.
The fix is not more rules. It is fewer, held harder. Decide which handful of decisions are structural — typeface roles, hierarchy, the grid, the crop logic — and make those genuinely immovable. Then let everything else run free. Colour, imagery, tone, campaign message: those are supposed to change, and they change more confidently when the frame around them is not up for renegotiation.
This is not a philosophy I arrived at recently. It is what the work has been doing since 2010, across clients who have nothing else in common.
The evidence
Amazon Fashion · 2010–2019
Fixed: one image system — casting, crop, light, type hierarchy. Free: season, product, market. The same system had to survive a hard downshift: a full page in Vogue, a 600px module on Amazon's homepage, and a taxi top read at eleven miles an hour. Coco Rocha in the September books, and New York wearing the campaign on its streets.

Fixed: four fonts in four roles, never swapped. Free: colour and imagery, which change week to week. A four-layer identity and poster system, plus a website built like software — a recurrence engine, a client directory, and an SEO layer that never ships a blank share card.

Fixed: an editorial voice and a persona that never breaks character. Free: a catalogue that keeps growing. Brand, packaging and a headless commerce build on Sanity and Shopify — a magazine that happens to sell skincare, with FLESH, CORPUS and SIGMA as house lines.

Fixed: the mark and the brand book, settled before anything else moved. Free: everything downstream — which is why a full ecommerce site could be designed and launched in twenty-four hours without the identity drifting.
